Ferid Bathory (フェリド・バートリー Ferido Bātorī?) is a character in the Seraph of the End series, namely one who murdered Yu and Mika's orphanage family as they attempted to escape to the outside world. A seventh progenitor among vampires, in his residence of Sanguinem he took an interest in illicitly drinking children's blood. Simultaneously, Ferid entwines his own activities into those of a much stronger vampire, Krul Tepes throughout the Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign manga series.

Where he also began to take an interest in human activity before the catastrophe in the prequel light novels, Ferid would become aware of human's increasing sense of power in the Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen light novel series, which is correspondingly shown in the manga adaption. Acting with Guren Ichinose, he was committed to his own ends in the still prequel Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Resurrection at Nineteen light novels.

His past stretching further back then that, Ferid was regarded as a Michaela by the second progenitor Saitō, and so was initially sired by him. The results of being left to his own devices are seen in the The Story of Vampire Michaela light novels, where Ferid turned Crowley Eusford into a vampire. Forming a long-term plan with him, Ferid would work with Crowley to the present day. Where his eccentricities were well-known, for his supposed friends, and foes who would never guess otherwise, it would often be too late that his murderous traits and capacity for betrayal were discovered. On the surface, Ferid claims he is bored without reason to live, yet has evidently created his own reasons.

Note: This is the page for Ferid in the manga and light novels, for the anime article detailing Ferid see: Ferid Bathory (Anime).

Appearance

He is physically a slender male, where a distinguishing trait is his long, silver hair that reaches his hips. Having bangs and a lock of hair over either ear so that they are visible, Ferid keeps his hair tied back into a pony tail held with a ribbon. The ribbon has stripes in the first chapter, but it is replaced with a black one after he is defeated by Krul. The ribbon tails trail to his shoulders. Ferid also wears a pair of red diamond-shaped earrings which dangle from either ear. As with all vampires, Ferid has pointed ears, with red eyes, and fangs.

Ferid's slightly changing attire is composed of several components, including a suit and a long coat. A white long-sleeved shirt with a decorative cut is worn over his posterior. This is split down the center and reaches his mid-calf. This has a black line with dark gray rhombi intermittently dispersed along it. There is originally a stripe on his left side as well, but this disappears after his defeat by Krul. It is secured in place by a wide black belt with a large buckle around his waist. The buckle rests over his left hip. The cuffs of the shirt are black and have four gold buttons down the outside. White lace ruffles comes out of the cuffs over his hands. Ferid wears white gloves.

The pair of white pants he dons are fitted within black boots, which reach his upper thigh. The boots have four golden buttons at his thigh and three at his calf. The boots are white at the toes, sole, and heel. A pair of small black ribbons meet over either heel and are kept in place by a small white button detail in the center.

A cape compliments the noble appearance. His white cape with a decorative cut over is over his shoulders and arms. It reaches to his waist in the front and down to his upper thighs around the back. The cape has black shoulder details as well as the black vampire insignia on the left shoulder. There are also two black buttons on the right. A gold ring connects to the vampire insignia and is attached to a chain running under his ruffles. There are gold decorations hanging from this chain. A wide dark gray strap beneath this cape moves from his right shoulder to his left hip. This has three strips running down it, with a small mark over each stripe at set intervals. Ferid wears a black collar that originally has a pair of two white stripes lining it in the first chapter, but he replaces it with a similar collar with one stripe afterward. The collar is decorated with a scarlet bow at the base of his throat. The tails of the ribbon reach his lower chest. Two layers of white ruffles are present beneath the bow and reach his mid-chest.

After being burned for treachery, Ferid's hair and noble garments were both incinerated. His hair began to grow back virtually immediately at the moment he was freed where it reached his ears. Where Ferid's hair soon recovered to the original length, he wore it untied. His clothing was now made up of casual attire consisting of a simpler shirt, with trousers. A black shoulder cloak, and gloves serve as ever distinctive signs.

Chapter 91 - Page 26

Joyful partaking in violence, with a twisted idea of what love is

Even as a human child, Ferid has an excellent memory and memorizes things easily, which leads him to become bored quickly. Raised strictly in a royal household and prepared to be a saint seemed to have no bearing on early psychopathic tendencies. He would remark that he loved his mother whilst bloodied and armed with a sword. Once a vampire much later he would retain this mentality when declaring that he loves his 'papa' Saitō so he has come to kill him. He was deemed "Abnormal" by Saitō, and has always been so even during the days he was a human child. This seems to have sustained itself to Ferid's teenage years as a human.

Not all that interested, really. Wealth. Power. Royalty. None of it interests me. And it's not only that. Maybe it's because I'm going through puberty, but... ...I don't see the point to living at all. Well... I guess if you order me to, I'll do it.

–Sharing his disinclination to help with his brother's kingdom. Chapter 134: "Reincarnation Rondo" Page 9-10

Taking to isolating himself in a field on more than one occasion, Ferid found he could not suppress what he found were self-destructive urges. Additionally wishing that he had never been born in the first place, Ferid found such thoughts were being repeated in his mind. Feeling he was being driven mad, Ferid also took issue with the world itself.

Just the thought that we'll get reborn right back into this stupid, dull, idiotic world is enough... ...To make me positively terrified of death.

–Speaking aloud to himself of his fears on death, but only in the context of not wanting to be reincarnated. Chapter 134: "Reincarnation Rondo" Page 17

Vampire

Ferid is here to ruin everything

Grand, and elaborate traps prepared

On the outside, Ferid acts kind and polite. However, he keeps many secrets which he has ready to deploy, and tells equally as many lies, similarly to use as and when they are best served. Extremely sadistic, Ferid will go to lengths to prepare, and then carry about murderous acts on a whim. A sense of pleasure appears to be gained in patiently manipulating others in order to torment them. He immensely enjoys crushing the hopes of human children and watching their expressions become filled with despair, where Ferid says he wants to hear them scream.

I want to see your faces twist in despair

Relishing the distress seen in others

Preferring the blood of beautiful boys and girls, he has kept many mansions filled with them over the centuries. Once he loses interest in one to the point of forgetting the child's name, Ferid kills him or her. Regarding age, Ferid claims the 16-year-old Mika is just barely within his preference range. He would like Mika to drink human blood and stop aging as soon as possible, and he frequently brings up the topic when alone with him.

Because I love you so much

Outwardly affectionate to Krul

Chatty, Ferid strikes up conversations with other vampires, and will speak calmly even in tense scenarios where he has the air of very much being in control of a situation. This is also applied to human children, which are otherwise ignored at best, or passively mistreated by other vampires at worse. Enquiring about their wellbeing, Ferid speaks about how matters must be stressful, before talking as if to a friend for them to come by his mansion. All the while happy, his manner of speaking is accompanied by a smile bordering on an inoffensive smirk, a default expression of sorts if anything.

When Mika was fighting Guren, he was talkative in offering his viewpoint on him and the latter's Moon Demon Company organization, then offered his help. Where it was declined as Mika wanted to fight alone, Ferid did not react badly, yet monitored the situation and provided his observations, specifically in pointing out the trap being developed. Gushing with a show at joy when seeing Yu again, Ferid guided Mika through the situation that the humans were using him. Effusive, Ferid then set about organizing murder.

Goodness. What an utterly adorable reaction. No wonder you are so attached to him. Well then, shall we begin? All humans besides precious Little Yu must die.

–A blushing Ferid to Mika about Yu. Chapter 13: "Reunion of Childhood Friends"

His happiness elevates to a keen sense of enthusiasm when undertaking actions. Having shown Yu a jar containing Akane's head, Ferid enjoys merrily hopping around to evade the resulting sword strikes. Playful, Ferid is sure to get words in such as how he is a delicate flower. Often described as unpredictable, Ferid says things to incite someone's temper but then claims that he is just kidding. Ferid irritates Mika, and Krul to a dangerous level, where the teasing does not cease regardless of even violent responses. Infamous for his eccentric behavior, which is often brushed off by others, Ferid tends to cause "interesting" things to happen, according to Crowley.

Oh noes! A scary demon is coming! Save me, Crowley! Save me!

–Leaping away from Yu who as a demon is trying to kill him. Chapter 46: "Return of the Hero"

Fond of macabre jokes, Ferid will deliver them even if they involve himself. Having had his arm sliced off, Ferid used the detached limb to merrily wave at Krul before departing. For some inexplicable reason, Ferid decided that it would be a good idea to flaunt his lower naked half to Shinoa and Mitsuba. Where he had been cut in half, with the regrowing underway, Ferid felt obliged to display it.

By the way, Ladies... The show is on full display right behind you. Are you sure you don't want to watch? ....See? My totally naked lower half... is lowly but surely surging back to full--"—

–Posing for Shinoa and Mitsuba while reuniting the nude halves of his body, for which he is then decapitated. Chapter 61: "Who's More Bored?"

Acting a hypocrite, Ferid knows of his misdeeds when critiquing others for what he does himself. It was effortless in Ferid declaring Krul a traitor, where he had betrayed her first. Accused by Crowley that he was the one who leaked the location of vampire nobles in Nagoya, Ferid was none the wiser.

How insulting. Everyone knows that I hate fools who betray their comrades more than anything else.

–An extraordinary claim given that Ferid betrays other vampires and leaks information to the humans on their locations. "The Namanari Awakens"

Denials of what is blatantly true can also change to blaming others. Operating under the practice that he can kill others' close ones, and that will be fine, Ferid mentions it is a case of time, but does not particularly care in any case. His most heinous of smirks are reserved for rubbing it in that he murdered someone's close ones, where he prefers that to working well with them even when beneficial to him. Whether the feeling is real or not, Ferid does consider focusing on what can be done together, rather than fighting against others. It is not a case of putting aside grudges through, Ferid causes them, then just wants to get away with serious transgressions.

Common sense? Pfff! Who needs that? Don't let that silly thing confine you, Crowley! Just think. Former enemies coming together... all through the power of friendship! Wouldn't that be so exciting?

–True that he is not confined by common sense, Ferid is under the impression he can befriend those whose families he has murdered. Chapter 44: "A Drive Along Death's Shoreline"

Ferid's heart pushed out by Lest Karr - chapter 50

Still when his heart is pushed out the back of his body

Being ahead of the curve due to the knowledge he has, Ferid knows when to stay his hand. Restraining Guren was not so much showing his capabilities in dealing with the commander of the Moon Demon Company, but also sparing him from other vampires where it transpires that Ferid was working with him. Meeting him alone, Ferid exchanged information with Guren after previously battling one another in a major city wide siege. Betraying vampire nobles in Nagoya, Ferid also provided the location of Crowley, a vampire he works closely with on occasion. Ferid done this since if Crowley alone were not targeted it might arouse suspicion. Further, in Ferid's characteristic fashion, he suggested to Crowley were it not fun despite cursed gear being involved which could have ended him. Aware of the seraph of the end experiment to come, Ferid kept his distance and advised Crowley to do the same if he wanted to live. Finding vampire nobles at Osaka Bay, he warned others to let him do the talking all they were all finished. Ferid was still reserved when his heart was pushed out by Lest Karr. Confronted by Saito after seeing him, Ferid made no attempt to attack this danger.

Sneaky, Ferid enters into surreptitious arrangements on multiple fronts, with various parties, both vampire and human. When Crowley suspects a high-ranking noble may be giving information to the humans that has resulted in even vampire nobles being destroyed, Ferid is the first suspect. Self-serving and traitorous to serve his own ends, Ferid uses blackmail to stay Krul's hand. Should he die by her, Ferid has apparently placed the means for the progenitor council to find out about her seraph of the end related activities so she would come off worse. Initially the threat to tell them resulted in Ferid being savaged himself, but after doubling down, he could press his advantage to result in his leverage being apparent.

Chapter 84 - Page 27 - Panel 1

Guile can prevail against stronger foes where strength can't

Knowing when to strike is a forte he possesses. Keeping an eye on Mika's battle with Guren's squad when his offer to help was turned down, Ferid spoke of how he was being encircled. With Guren drawing too close to Mika, he intervened. After blocking Guren's sword, Ferid knocked him away. By Crowley going first to ambush a third progenitor, once that surprise betrayal was believed to have been dealt with, Ferid could follow up with his own, even greater unexpected one. Succeeding, Ferid could surprise Krul, a vampire noble far stronger than he, and drain her of blood until she fell unconscious. With other vampires around, Ferid was just as quick to announce her as a traitor as he detailed her crimes, so as to avoid repercussions for his actions towards the queen of Japan.

Ferid orders a retreat

No qualms about running away

While powerful in his own right, Ferid thinks little of retreating in the face of more powerful foes, or stronger numbers if he is unable to win. Thrashed by Krul, he spoke how he would keep her activities a secret. Similarly, Ferid will resort to words, such as seeking answers from the awakened First as he subtly set about reattaching his severed body. In response to the main force of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army having arrived at Shinjuku, he was prepared to abandon the invasion that he was at the head of.

Hmm... All these filthy humans crawling about is turning my stomach. I'm going to leave.

–An excuse to retreat in the face of human reinforcements at Shinjuku. Chapter 14: "Everyone's a Sinner"

Although having an advantage against vampire progenitors with a sinful key having been activated, Ferid took the chance to escape while he could. Requesting assistance from Crowley, he would depend on others for his escapes too.

Ferid troll

Directing the progenitor council, while bringing Mika in to unnerve Krul

Acting to involve others, Ferid was set on destroying the Moon Demon Company, until his side was bolstered with the arrival of Crowley, along with Chess Belle and Horn Skuld. Embracing the opportunity, Ferid changed his next move to take advantage his newfound leverage afforded him, so changed his plans to capturing them as a food source instead. He used the humans attacking Sanguinem emergency to draw foreign vampire nobles to Japan. Broadcasting Krul's capture, and the destruction the city was sustaining, Ferid spoke highly of his own mentioned heroism in bringing this plot to light. It was a similar grandiose performance as the one he gave when warning the progenitor council of the seraph related experimentation that was taking place. As an orator, Ferid succeeded in getting his point across, and used visual cues to highlight the dangers at hand.

Ch112-50

Saying that he was alone all his life

Acquiring a bus, Ferid would transport Shinoa squad, and is content driving them to destinations as well. Laughing fondly at their interactions among themselves, Ferid would speak as if he himself were among friends. Seemingly enjoying others' company, when he can get it, Ferid is just as satisfied with inappropriate comments, given the circumstances, that he can add.

Isn't this fun? It's like we're on a field trip! We even have a ton of packed lunches!

–Thoroughly enjoying being around others, yet Shinoa Squad were referred to as packed lunches. Chapter 47: "Prayer's Price"

Ferid up to no good

Mocking both vampires and humans to his mysterious partner

Towards his own supporters, Ferid may say carelessly cruel things. If he knows about it, Ferid does not seem bothered by being viewed as a deviant. His true objective is a mystery, even to his closest followers. Appearing to be at work manipulating many areas behind the scenes, Ferid considers the humans to be ugly, insatiable cowards. He also mocks the vampires' boundless arrogance. Ferid would always be ready to share his inner thoughts on humans, and set about enacting them without delay.

And so we have them let us drink their blood. Just like the good pets they are. You know? I think I'm feeling peckish. Excuse me a moment... I'm going to murder some humans.

–Not abandoning his practice of causing misery. Chapter 69: "The Day the Sun Was Lost"

His mask would rarely slip that he could dismissed as just joking around others. At the same time, when tensions were high after the squad returned to the Japanese Imperial Demon Army where soldiers were hostile, Ferid felt that was a good opportunity to make a spectacle.

Hello, helloooo! I'm just your friendly, neighborhood vampire, come to attack you!

–Calling to the Shibuya City Guards when he is intentionally making things difficult for Guren. Chapter 70: "Retainer's Cause"

Ferid meets saito

Surprised at finding who he resents

Overall, Ferid does not even have a positive impression of himself. Resentment is shown, namely towards Saitō for having turned him into a vampire, Ferid has grown bored of being immortal and seems to lack a will to live. Where it is something more potent than general vampire based apathy, Ferid vents this with a resolve to kill. Having the means to do so, Ferid attempted to attack Saito with a Sinful Key. Disappointed that he was never given a reason to live, it is a question Ferid also has for the First. More than once Ferid makes a comment about embracing the day he can finally die, yet more often than not he will seize a chance to ignite his interest in what is at hand.

While he does take the side of a soldier in dealing with a Hyakuya Sect agent attacking him, Ferid is sure to let the agent know that he prefers the blood of children, but his will have to do. Thanked for his aid, Ferid then sharply reverses the mood by suggesting the soldier be drained of blood as well.

No problem, no problem! We're allies after all. It's only natural we help each other. So! Do you want his blood, Crowley?

–After helping and assuring a soldier, Ferid asks Crowley whether he wants to satiate his thirst, then answers: "But the blood of allies you just betrayed is the tastiest kind!" Chapter 91: "Orphan Prince", page 7-8

Although the soldier was spared, it seems an indication that Ferid may very well be motivated by a particular taste of blood. Where it is affected by hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, that are released into the blood in response to fear, this may taste nice to Ferid, where his fondness for certain blood can factor into his decisions. Taste or not, Ferid will dispose of those he is working with where they have no further use. Most likely tasking Fuola Honte with maintaining one of his mansions, Ferid would then direct Crowley to destroy him when the time came for squad members to see the bodies of their family members kept there. The use someone can be to Ferid rarely outweighs his desire to simply kill them though.

A point, influenced by his body unable to die, is reached where Ferid discards whatever survival policies he had at the time. It is a mix of goading someone into attacking, and an unwise decision of doing such a thing bearing in mind who he was speaking to, that results in Ferid declining an offer to come quietly, and instead challenge second progenitor Urd, who was also flanked by third progenitor Lest Karr, and fifth progenitor Ky Luc.

Oh, hell naw!☆ I'm super-powerful!☆ If you wanna kill me, come give it yer best shot!☆

–Ferid is missing his right arm with second progenitor Urd attacking. He receives a chance to lay down his sword and surrender and replies accordingly. (note: the text is replicated, the stars within the speech bubbles as well). Chapter 92: "Black Demon Scenario", page 4

Coming to feel that everything is a result of luck, it is a notion that would appear quite liberating for Ferid. Appearing free, Ferid would also be exceptionally happy to learn plots could be interfered with by others. He was very pleased to suspect everything was a result of the First's plan.

As a human Ferid had an interest in acquiring knowledge and reading. It is possible he was able to understand foreign languages as well. For his present eccentrics, it seems his memory is remarkable. In stating how Crowley is the 440th, it is plausible that Ferid has been keeping an exact count of the number of times he has murdered reincarnations of his brother.

Actually, if I must confess... ...I'm the annoying type who can't forget a single thing, no matter how much I wish I could.

–Forthright, and contrary to his claims of being unable to remember certain matters. Chapter 134: "Reincarnation Rondo" Page 27-28

Ambitions

As a vampire acquiring blood, specifically of certain children, was something Ferid worked towards. His cruelty was especially apparent when Ferid acted to murder children. Taking an interest in the activities of Krul, he made some attempt to bribe her since he had knowledge of her seraph based activities. Unusually for a vampire, Ferid was willing to work with humans namely Guren, which is something he would commit to over time. Turning Crowley into a vampire, one who was to conceal his strength over over of years from others, may have implied Ferid was planning something.

For why, Ferid appeared to be investing in areas that may have been interesting to him but with little resembling a grand plan of his own. In betraying Krul, he succeeded in drawing other vampire progenitors to Japan, yet the anticipated conflict between Saitō and Urd Geales did not arise as he may have hoped. If he was curious about Guren's actions on a human resurrection, again it was not something that concerned him directly. Ferid was upfront with Saito that he wanted nothing, and there was no point to his activities. Not even with his own interest in acquiring sinful keys.

A front of not truly having any goal in mind, other than enjoying riling those stronger than himself, was maintained well into the present day. Known only to Ferid, a lone ambition of his arose when he was a human teenager. At sixteen, Ferid regarded the world as putrid and had accessed a document on reincarnation.

It's being born again after you die. Why humans are here. Where we go when we die. That sort of thing. According to this treatise... ...It's all one big circle. We're born. We die. Then we're born and die again. Over and over, born back into this boring world.

–As a human he spoke and had thoughts on reincarnation. Chapter 134: "Reincarnation Rondo" Page 12-13

Fundamentally not in favor of reincarnation, it may have factored into Ferid's desire at the time to disappear and die from what may have been a revelation for him. As the prince of a kingdom, Ferid had royalty, wealth and power at his disposal but was simply not interested in that. After murdering his brother, Ferid attempted to persuade his brother's retainers of embarking on a conquest to the far East. This was done with the larger goal of ending the cycle of reincarnation.

No, listen. This scroll on reincarnation was written by a sage from far, far to the East. I want us to go on a conquest all the way over there.

–Speaking to his kingdom's retainers, Ferid sought to bring an end to all being reincarnated. Chapter 134: "Reincarnation Rondo" Page 19

Story

For the total coverage story detailing Ferid's history as well see:

Story: Ferid Bathory

Ferid Bathory approaches the young Mikaela Hyakuya in Sanguinem and asks if he and Yūichirō Hyakuya will be coming over to his mansion. He has been providing Mika with food in exchange for being able to drink his blood. Pleasant in his demeanour and giving children gifts where other vampires did not bother, Ferid would be waiting at the exit of the city of which Mika, Yu and their orphanage family were attempting to escape from. The expression on a human's face, the instant hope turns to despair is why he has played this little game. Ferid immediately begins slaughtering the orphans until only Mika and Yu left. After mortally wounding Mika, Ferid would be shot in the head by Yu.

Having survived the gunshot, Ferid would be roused by the arrival of Krul Tepes and respond to her questions with his own. Aware of her seraphs, Ferid mentions revealing this to the progenitor council and is physically brutalized in response. Agreeing to keep her secret, over the next four years he would seek out Mika with information concerning Yu.

With the human Japanese Imperial Demon Army amassing their forces, Ferid would hear Krul's intent to have them destroyed. At the head of ground forces in the invasion of Shinjuku, he finds Guren Ichinose the commander of the Moon Demon Company coming towards his location. He prevents him from fighting further with Mika. Seeing Yu again, Ferid would assist in having Mika retrieve him and then order the capture of other humans thanks to Crowley Eusford's presence on the battlefield. Ferid fled, having to abandon the siege due to the arrival of reinforcements led under Kureto Hīragi.

Announcing how Yu transformed into a one winged being to the progenitor council, Ferid declared this as evidence that humans were still experimenting on the seraph of the end. At the same time, Ferid pressed his leverage over Krul to demonstrate that she cannot remove him otherwise her secret might be uncovered.

Arriving in Nagoya, he would reveal his co-conspirator Guren, who is the human Ferid provided the location of vampire nobles for assassination to. In the aftermath of a seraph being summoned to the world Ferid would betray Krul and proclaim her an enemy of vampire kind for her involvement in the seraph of the end experiment. He would contact Urd Geales to inform him of the attack on Sanguinem, to induce him and other foreign progenitors to come to the country.

After locating Yu and Mika with their squad, he and Crowley would transport them to Osaka Bay, purportedly to show them the location that the catastrophe took place in. Then being sentenced to sunlight exposure torture for his role in the vampire losses endured, Ferid would be rescued from Ky Luc's watch. At Guren's residence, Ferid would take into his possession a sinful key dropped from a fallen seraph. Travelling to Shibuya, he drew out Shikama Dōji, the first vampire who had gained control over Shinoa Hīragi. After observing the fight between the First and Saitō who had unleashed his Hyakuya Sect army, Ferid would attempt to kill Saitō before absconding.

Having sensed that the First had been captured, Ferid thought it was now his and Guren's turn to act. Arriving in a vehicle to pick up the involved parties, Ferid transports them to Akihabara.

Powers and Abilities

Natural abilities

As a vampire, Ferid is naturally physically far stronger, and more agile than a human. Being a seventh progenitor, he is incredibly strong even among vampire nobles, particularly stronger than those of lower ranks. However, he is weaker than the higher-ranked progenitors, such as ranks six upwards to one. Unless he is facing a large number of strong opponents, Ferid uses his bare hands to fight. A minor sweep of one hand can cut through flesh and bone to decapitate someone, such is the raw supernatural based strength behind his movements. Fast enough to evade bullet fire, Ferid is quick enough to essentially vanish and appear in a different area, not a result of teleportation, rather physically moving there due to the extent of his speed.

Chapter 92 - Page 25

Happy as a head

His vampirism affords Ferid immortality in that he will live forever. Regenerative abilities are also available, demonstrated when his arm was severed by Krul. Although pain is felt, Ferid was able to re-attach his arm to begin with, and have it functioning properly as well.[4] Having been dismembered by overtly powerful forces, from Shikama Doji's scythe, to cursed gear which can destroy vampires, and being decapitated, multiple times, Ferid can recover from even extreme wounds very quickly. Having his heart pushed out his body was a rare case where Ferid took a drastic response to recover. Where this would have resulted in him becoming a demon, Ferid reacted by draining the blood of Kimizuki at once.

Having powers enabled on account of his position in vampire society, as a noble vampire, Ferid has the ability and permission to turn humans into vampires as he pleases. Although he suggests turning Yu into a vampire at one point, Ferid has yet to be seen exercising this ability. While permitted, an unspoken cultural restraint may hamper his ability to use such as power, as vampires typically detest increasing their numbers.

He is cunning and manipulative, which are very much powers at his disposal. He is also wise enough to toe the line of taunting Krul to the point of attacking him, without actually crossing it. He is extremely intelligent and patient and has been working on numerous plots for centuries, where good planning serves him well. His vampire enhanced senses are a physical quality that assists with his choices. As well as hearing, Ferid could tell he was being watched by someone quite a distance away.

Unknown abilities

Another one of Ferid's unique abilities is his ability to somehow circumvent the usual inability of vampires to use Cursed Gears. As seen where he was able to utilize the portal making abilities of Jigenso, he had successfully accomplished this by physically holding the Cursed Gear's owner, and from them he could somehow activate the weapon's abilities. Ferid had successfully used this twice, the first in order to sneak up on Saitō, and secondly to surprise Urd Geales, the two second Progenitors.

Equipment

Ferid's sword 2

Ferid uses a European-style sword with a distinctive curved cross guard. His physical prowess can be bolstered further through the effective use of his sword that is used in battle against other strong weapon users. Where vampire weapons can drain a user's blood to gain power, so too can Ferid benefit from enhanced strength on account of his sword.

Although not directly shown carrying it, Ferid owns a gun, ceremonial but functional, that is used by Mika;[5] however, his proficiency at wielding it remains unknown. The chances are, Ferid could perform greater feats by himself compared to a regular non-cursed gear bullet from an antique weapon.

Declaration on saving the Wolrd

Later after acquiring the Sinful Key from the Sixth Trumpet, it has been shown that Ferid possesses immense in-depth knowledge of the key's mechanics and abilities. As seen where he implied during his conversation with Crowley that he knew a multitude of ways to use the Key and its various powers. Fine with playing around with it, such as by balancing it on his fingers, later Ferid fully displayed the Key's abilities when he successfully attacked Saitō with it. In using the Key in conjunction with his ensnarement capabilities, Ferid obliterated a majority of Saito's body and rendered his immense regenerative powers nonexistent for a considerable amount of time.

Where it was apparently a relatively new weapon, that does not come across as easy to use, let alone well, Ferid could have Jigenso operate to open a portal from a distance to assail Saito in the first place. It is all the more telling of Ferid's ability to understand such a utensil as cursed gears involve making a contract between a human and demon, where others may not always be able to wield one, let alone someone else's at all.

I have no interest in what you humans do. Tear each other apart for all I care. What does it matter to me if the pigs start feeding on each other? Assuming you two really are human. Seeing how you survived a blow from my sword, I’m not so sure. I suppose it doesn’t really matter either way, though.

–Speaking to Guren and Mahiru and not really caring for anything about them. Chapter 7, page 319

Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign

Quotes from Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign:

As you walk the thin line between despair and hope... I wonder what your voices will sound like when you scream.

–Tormenting the Hyakuya orphans having awaited to spring a trap on them. Chapter 1: "The World of Blood Legacy", page 49

You have but one family member left, Little Yu Hyakuya. And you will do everything you can to ensure his safety. Isn't that right? Oh, what love? Aha ha ha!

–Though mocking, Ferid's statement is accurate. Chapter 11: "Queen's Contract"

As for you Mika... How about you show us the power of Third Progenitor Krul Tepes's favorite Pet. Okay? You and I shall kill that peacock there. Understood?

–Speaking to Mika about Guren who has come to fight them. Chapter 11, "Queen's Contract"

Ooh! Such a performance from you, Mika. It is no wonder you are Third Progenitor Krul Tepes's favorite. Your power and arrogance are overwhelming. But that arrogance will trip you up. Shall I help you out?

–Having observed Mika fighting, and noting he is being encircled. Chapter 12: "A Very Safe Supplement"

See, Mika? You shouldn't underestimate humans. They are greedy cowards, but also exceptionally determined. Ha ha! Though I'm sure I needn't tell that to a former human!

–Simultaneously reinforcing Mika's negative view of humans, and belittling him. Chapter 12: "A Very Safe Supplement"

Goodness, what was that? Humans certainly know how to craft unpleasant monsters.

–Opinions having witnessed Yu's partial seraph transformation. Chapter 13: "Reunion of Childhood Friends"

That will be quite enough of that. You have had your fun for today. Now shut your mouth like a good boy.

–To Mika who protests leaving. Chapter 14: "Everyone's a Sinner"

Because you have yet to drink human blood... your body still ages. Yet, you are still that age I find most beautiful... Just barely, anyway. So then... How about drinking human blood and halting your growth at its best spot? You'll feel much better.

–Not wanting Mika to become too physically mature. Chapter 22: "Taboo Krul"

Oh... Him, m'Lord? He is my most favorite servant of late. I can't bear to have him leave my side.

–Informing the Progenitor Council who Mika is, having brought him to make Krul uncomfortable. Chapter 22: "Taboo Krul"

Aha ha! Please, don't glare at me with that adorable face. It makes my heart flutter. Of course, it is my fault that Little Yu escaped. If they discover that, I will face even worse punishment... Oh, wait! Wait, wait! Then doesn't this mean... you and I are actually partners in crime? We share the same secret, after all. Yay! Now we can finally be friends! Take my hand. Submit to me, Krul Tepes. Just kidding! Anyway, I think that's enough for today. I'd hate to be wrong and wind up dead. But I'll be back later. Next time I hope we'll be the best of friends!

–Mentioning his role in Yu escaping, and attempting ease Krul into the idea they are allies now. Chapter 22: "Taboo Krul"

Oh no, Krullie dear! It seems like this whole area is already under attack by the humans.

–To Krul having arrived in Nagoya via aircraft as the vampires are being attacked. Chapter 35: "Traitorous Allies"

Mmm, too close. Too close. Drink any more and she just may die.

–After drinking Krul's blood having successfully ambushed her. Chapter 41: "Arrogant Love"

Ooh, keep the compliments coming.

–Favoring Crowley's praise after defeating Krul. Chapter 41: "Arrogant Love"

Me? All I want is to kill some time.

–His response to Crowley when asked about his objective given Krul is down, and humans have weaponized a seraph. Chapter 41: "Arrogant Love"

Well, you see... We actually have a surprising and highly inconvenient issue on our hands at the moment.

–Alerting the Progenitor Council as Sanguinem comes under heavy attack as he speaks. Chapter 42, "Sanguinem's End"

You can see our predicament. I'm sure my lords and ladies of the Progenitor Council will wish to come here to eradicate these rebels personally... But first, I would beg permission to withdraw our presence from Japan temporarily. And, if I may, I'd like to deliver the traitor Krul Tepes to you directly.

–As explosions occur in Sanguinem, he seeks direction from the progenitor council. Chapter 42: "Sanguinem's End"

Hey, now! I'll have you know that I thought at least you were my friend!

–Apparently his views on Crowley, where Ferid has not been a friend at all. Chapter 43: "Where It All Begins"

Boy, living forever gets so boring sometimes.

–An opinion to Crowley, and one he would voice later as well. Chapter 43: "Where It All Begins"

And oh was it ever so fun.

–Speaking to Crowley about killing Yu and Mika's family. Chapter 44: "A Drive Along Death's Shoreline"

Hey, you two. I heard you being attacked by a dangerous vampire, so I came to your rescue. Come take a ride with me. I'll save you.

–Pulling up beside Yu and Mika when the squad is attempting to battle Crowley. Chapter 46: "Return of the Hero"

I'm a delicate flower, y'know.

–A fanciful claim to Crowley as he avoids Yu's strikes having shown him Akane's head. Chapter 46: "Return of the Hero"

My, my! Hey, Mika? Are you sure it's okay for him to use this much demon power? ...Don't you think he might get stuck as a demon? For good? I'm worried for the poor guy.

–Where Yu's demon is taking over, Ferid prods Mika to intercede. Chapter 46: "Return of the Hero"

Well, what will it be? Who will be the first to beg, 'Please save us, Gracious Lord Bathory?' Say it, or I'm not saving anybody... I was just kidding! I came here to be your new friend, after all. And it is a personal policy of mine to always save my friends for free. Now then, let us go rescue dear Yu.

–Petitioning Shinoa Squad to beseech him into helping, before outrageously lying. Chapter 46: "Return of the Hero"

Wow! Haven't you grown into the cute one! Your demon is on the verge of rampage...yet you still have such clear and beautiful eyes. No wonder you are the extra-special guinea pig. Hmm... Perhaps before I heal you I'll take a little sip of your blood.

–Beholding Yu who is partially possessed by his demon. Ferid would simultaneously drink his blood, and inject him with a syringe to deal with the possession. Chapter 46: "Return of the Hero"

Oh? So this is my plot...?

–A question for Mika (though Ferid would not be forthright in saying it was Guren's plot). Chapter 46: "Return of the Hero"

He is haunted... by his friends. All his precious companions and their deaths. Eight years ago, he had friends he cared about very much. Friends he would give his life for. Their names were... Shinya Hīragi, Norito Goshi, Mito Jūjō, Sayuri Hanayori, Shigure Yukimi. But they all died.... Oh, they died all right. And then they were revived. But the world does not permit the dead to come back. It was a presumption that angered a petty god. The price of their return was great. Very, very great. Can you guess what it was? All the adult humans of the world were killed by a virus. Ever since, Guren Ichinose... has been haunted by that sin and its price.

–Surprisingly insightful of Guren's condition, and revealing potentially lethal news concerning his squad to Shinoa Squad, then revealing what is linked to the world's ruin. Chapter 47: "Prayer's Price"

I hardly remember! Hmm... I think it was a dog's blood? Try saying 'woof' for me!

–Feigning unawareness to Crowley when asked about their sire (Saito). Chapter 49: "Progenitor's Memory"

Don't glare at me like that. It's Krul Tepes you want to get back at, right? She was the one who turned you.

–Ignoring the fact it would not have occurred had Ferid not mortally wounded Mika, and moving the blame to Krul. Chapter 49: "Progenitor's Memory"

Aaah... Once again, the sky is such a beautiful blue... It's become absolutely boring.

–Thoughts as he gazes at the sky. Chapter 49: "Progenitor's Memory"

Aha ha! A higher level of difficulty only makes the game more fun, don't you think?

–To Crowley when Saito and Urd and within the same vicinity. Having set the game, Ferid has Krul imprisoned for Saito to find, where her blood would draw Urd. Chapter 50: "Brothers in Blood"

Maaaybe? Maaaybe not. Believe what you will. But for now... You! Get back over here!

–Answering Ky Luc when said to be bluffing about a plan proceeding as expected, before ordering the severed lower half of his body to return to him. Chapter 61: "Who's More Bored?"

It was really hot! For a moment there, I had to wonder if I was suddenly alive again!

–Mentioning his sunlight exposure torture to Crowley. Chapter 61: "Who Is More Bored?"

Yep. Our hearts are long dead. Aren't you just so jealous of humans for still being alive?

–Agreeing with Crowley he is definitely long dead. Chapter 61: "Who Is More Bored?"

I'm more powerful than you, soooo I'll pin you an' strip you... an' then do aaall sorts of unspeakable things to you until you say, 'Eek! Master Ferid, pwease stop picking on poor widdle me!

–An unusually creepy response, even by Ferid's standards, after Mika asks what if he can refused to hand over the cross-shaped knife which was released from the seraph. Chapter 68: "Saviors"

A 'messed-up experiment' on saving the world. And today, we made one more successful step forward by eliminating one of the disasters that plagued it. That makes us saviors! Isn't that right, Guren?

–Speaking to Mika and Guren with the sixth trumpet having been sealed, where the horsemen of the world have disappeared as well. Chapter 68: "Saviors"

Aha ha! Well? What do you think, Crowley? They look like they're having fun. Don't they?! They're brimming with the happy, bouncy energy of life. Doesn't it make you want to suck 'em dry and watch 'em die? What's with that look? Don't you want to drink their blood?

–Driving with Crowley and referring to the squad happy amongst themselves. Chapter 69: "The Day the Sun Was Lost"

Little Mika darling must have a will of steel to sit right in the middle of them and hold back the urge to drink.

–Responding to a comment he appears cheerful, and proceeding to say he is nervous about dropping a knife he has balanced on his fingertip. Chapter 84: "Nativity of a Princess", page 2

I’ve always preferred children's blood, but you'll have to do.

–His specific request for Crowley when they are under attack from progenitors. Chapter 92: "Black Demon Scenario", Page 10

Yep! Eeeverything is luck! There's no meaning to life! No point to death! All there is... is the glimmer of luck in the moment!

–Expressed views that also make Ferid happy. Chapter 92: "Black Demon Scenario", page 15

–Having driven a truck to pick up Shinoa squad. Chapter 110 "Expose the Past to the Sun", page 34
